Patrice Evra signs one year extension at United
Frenchman Patrice Evra has signed on a new one year contract extension with Manchester United that will see him remain at Old Trafford for Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge at the club.
The former AS Monaco was considering leaving the Theater of Dreams after eight years at the club, but he has decided to stay on for one more year. His previous contract was due to expire next month and he could have left the club for free as well.
Italian giants Inter Milan and former club AS Monaco were keen on his services but the Frenchman has decided to stay on at his old club for one more season.
The news was broken first by the official Twitter account of Manchester United which confirmed the French left back’s new deal with the club.
United has been on the hunt for another left for quite some time to either replace or provide competition for Patrice Evra and have already tabled a bid for young England player Luke Shaw, who is currently on the books at Southampton.
Evra, who had also reportedly been in talks with Juventus, will apparently help Shaw settle at the club and help the transition from one of the best left backs the Premier League has ever seen to one of the brightest prospects in years a smoother process for new manager van Gaal.
Patrice Evra is a hugely popular figure in the dressing room and has a cult following among the fans and keeping him might have been a masterstroke from the incoming United manager as he tries to make the club his own following the disastrous reign of David Moyes.
United are still in pole position to land Shaw, although any move for the 18 year old will take place after the FIFA World Cup.

Evra Says Vidic “Will be sorely missed”
Manchester United have seen the last of Nemanja Vidic after the defender played his final match for the club in the 1-1 draw against Southampton. Since joining the club in 2006, he has been excellent and has led the club to numerous titles. Currently, he is the captain of the team. However, United decided not to renew his contract and Vidic signed on a free transfer with Inter Milan. Still at the peak of his career, Vidic will be sorely missed at United next season according to defender Patrice Evra.
The French left back himself appears to be at the end of his United career, as the club have not shown any intend to extend his contract runs out in a few weeks. Evra joined United along with Vidic during the January transfer window of 2006. His performances this campaign have reached a new low and it is becoming clear that the 32-year-old may have to look at pastures new in the summer. United are close to sealing the deal for Southampton defender Luke Shaw for around £ 25 million. The 18-year-old is seen as the future of United.
For now, Evra has stated that he is extremely unhappy with the way the club are losing out on Vidic, who still has several years left in him.
“It’s painful to lose Vida. For me, he is a great centre-back. When you see a player like Vidic leaving the club, you feel really sad. When you speak about Vida, it’s like you’re speaking about myself. We joined the club together. I remember the first game was so hard. In one match, we played in the reserves together. We were so poor! I’m really sad to lose him. It was a difficult moment but we stuck together,” said the French left back, who has been linked with PSG.
